Summary[edit]
Description"Unknows Hero".jpg |
English: The Monument to the Unknown Hero at Avala is a monumental mausoleum on top of Mount Avala in the southeast of Belgrade. The creator of this monument is Croatian and Yugoslav sculptor Ivan Meštrović. It was built in 1938.
The monument to the Unknown Hero was built from blocks of granite, a solid grayish-black stone (gabbro) from the state quarry "Jablanica", near Mostar in the Neretva valley. The mausoleum is reached by cascading staircase approaches, which provide exceptional views from the base to the top of the monument. You pass through it along the longitudinal axis of the sarcophagus, through two gates, emphasized by double pairs of monumental caryatids (female figures in the role of pillars) that face the passage itself, thus indicating the importance of the direction of the visitor's movement. The 4-meter-high caryatids are carved from a single piece of stone made of the same material as the stone blocks of the monument. They are massive sculptures at the entrance-gate, dressed in different folk clothes decorated with rich jewelry. Modern geometric stylization was implemented in the way the clothes were processed, while the faces are realistic, some characterized, and some neutral.
