Summary[edit]

Description
English: a bearded man holds his pipe in one hand and the newspaper in another, indicating that he has been reading depressing news stories. To his left is the text of The Optimist, a poem by Edmund Vance Cooke.

The Optimist

Wish somethin' cheerful would happen,
More in accord 'it my views;
Nothin' but shootin' 'n' scrappin'
Runnin' through all of the news.

"Russians blowed up! Awful slaughter!!"
"Tibetans filled full of lead!"
"Moro blood flowin' like water!"
"Hereros a-dyin' 'n' dead."

On our own boats blood a-spillin',
Might say 'most here at our door;
Practicin' how to do killin',
Killin' ourselves by the score!

Ev'ry so often a lynchin';
Shootin' men into a sieve;
Out in Col'roddy they're pinchin'
Men just for darin' to live.

Love 'n' law not to be trusted;
Nothin' but powder 'n' ball;
Makes a man sort of disgusted
That he's a human at all.

I ain't no pessimist, nuther,
Not by a -- heavenly sight!
Got to keep "lovin' my brother";
Mebbe we'll come out all right.
