English:
"Taking Loads up from the Lake", Malawi, ca. 1894-1904
Photograph of men carrying wood and other loads up a steep wooded slope. The materials are likely for the construction of the Livingstonia Institution, the mission station established on the shores of Lake Nyasa and named after the pioneering missionary David Livingstone. Livingstonia was built on high ground above Lake Nyasa away from malarial areas. The mission station developed into a small town.; This belongs to a series of Church of Scotland Foreign Missions Committee lantern slides relating to Dr Robert Laws (1851-1934) the Scottish Missionary. In 1875, inspired by David Livingstone (1813-1873), Laws travelled to Malawi and was involved in the foundation of the mission station of Livingstonia on the shores of Lake Nyasa. During the succeeding 50 years he also established a network of hundreds of schools. In 1908 Laws was elected moderator of the General Assembly of the United Free Church of Scotland.
