Summary[edit]

Description
English: "Out of the Center" is an abstract watercolor painting by Arizona based artist, Bruce Black. Black is known for his abstract paintings made of individual marks that move across the page in a way that similar to typography or ancient calligraphy. The viewer must interpret the symbols and patterns to find personal meaning in the work.

This painting has an aqua blue/gree square in the center with an hourglass shape stretching through lines through the image. Purple and reddish browns are dominant on the borders. The painting has a trapezoid shape that gives it a unique and mysterious quality.

"Out of the Center" continues Black's series, "The Written Picture Project" which uses ancient illuminated manuscripts as a reference. Black places individual marks on his paintings in a way that is similar to type or handwriting. The beauty of the marks of old manuscripts is often all that is legible or understandable to the casual observer. Black attempts to mimic this feeling with his own watercolor marks. in the end, the viewer must intuit the meaning of the paintings through the color and composition. Black's paintings recall Mark Rothko's abstract expressionist works of the 1950s as well as field painting from the 1960s. They also bare resemblance to Navajo rug weaving.

Bruce Black lives and works in Phoenix Arizona.
