Description

“Fallen Comrades” - The evacuation of over 100,000 men from Anzac Cove and Suvla Bay at Gallipoli was successfully carried out from 15-20 December 1915, the last soldiers leaving Helles on 9 January 1916.

In the 8 months since the landing at Gallipoli on 25 April, nearly 5000 New Zealanders had been wounded in the failed attempt to take the peninsula. Left behind were the dead: 87,000 Turks, 44,000 British and French, and 8,700 Australians and 2,721 New Zealanders.
