English: Il monumento fu voluto a Napoli all'indomani della terribile pestilenza del 1656, che portò la popolazione della città da circa 350.000 a circa 180.000 abitanti!
San Gaetano da Thiene (veneto, ma venerato a Napoli subito dopo San Gennaro) fu ritenuto artefice della fine dell'epidemia: da ciò tutta una serie di monumenti, fra cui questo, dalla complessa e lunga storia. Il disegno di Cosimo Fanzago del 1657-1664 prevedeva l'innalzamento sul piedistallo della colonna romana (oggi all'inizio di Via Caracciolo, cosiddetta "colonna spezzata") sulla quale collocare la statua del santo. Il timore (giustificato) di terremoti determinò l'opposizione dei proprietari dei vicini palazzi e il fallimento del progetto. Di esso restano solo quattro angioletti ai lati del piedistallo, eseguiti da Andrea Falcone (Napoli 1630-Napoli 1677) e forse la base circolare su cui poggia San Gaetano, verosimilmente realizzata per la colonna. L'attuale statua in bronzo, in sostituzione di altra seicentesca, è del 1747 circa, forse eseguita a Roma. |
