BIOGRAPHY
Após concluir estudos na Academia Portuense de Belas-Artes, parte em 1873 para Paris, pensionista do Estado em Pintura de Paisagem. Em França pinta em Barbizon, lugar mítico de nascimento do Naturalismo, e em Auvers convive com Daubigny, um dos mestres do movimento.

Expõe no Salon em 1876 e 78. Fixando-se em Roma, viaja com Marques de Oliveira por várias cidades de Itália. Em 1879 regressa ao país. Falecido Tomás da Anunciação, assume a cadeira de Paisagem na Academia de Lisboa, onde forma uma geração de alunos que aprendem a levar o cavalete para o campo e a exercitar a observação directa da natureza. As paisagens que apresenta na histórica exposição da Sociedade Promotora das Belas-Artes, em 1880, introduzem a estética naturalista em Portugal. A crítica entusiasma-se com o “Divino Mestre”, e o rei D. Fernando ii adquire a Paisagem tirada da Charneca de Belas ao pôr do sol, dando caução definitiva ao movimento. À sua volta, reúne-se um grupo de jovens pintores que se apresenta anualmente nas “Exposições de Quadros Modernos”, e que Columbano celebrizará em 1885 no retrato colectivo O Grupo do Leão. Nos últimos anos de actividade, desenvolve uma pintura de tipos e costumes regionais, que será explorada, de forma mais exuberante, por Malhoa e Carlos Reis.
