If Big Boys voice was gruff, there was still a gruffervoice that used to come from a man in the corner ofthe ward to the left of my bed. During the first fouror five days I was an inmate of the ward, I was mostinterested m all the voices I heard because I lay in totaldarkness. The bandages extended down from the top ofmy head to my upper lip, and I did not know whether ornot I ever would see again. I would listen carefully toall remarks within ear-shot, whether they be from doc-tors, nurses or patients. I listened in the hope that fromthem I might learn whether or not there was a possibilityof my regaining vision. But all of their remarks withregard to my condition were ambiguous and unsatisfac-tory.
