Text Appearing Before Image:
WILLIAM TECUMSEH SHERMAN was called crazy because, early in the Warof the Rebellion, he declared it would take many hundred thousand men and several yearsto destroy the Confederacy. President Lincoln was a thorough believer in Shermanssound sense and judgment, and rated him as only second to Grant as a military com-mander. His march to the sea was his best known exploit. In 1869 he was made Generalof the Army, retired in 1884, and died in 1891. He was a native of Ohio, born in 1820, andwas a graduate of West Point in the class of 1840. (226)
Text Appearing After Image:
^:^,^%W;^: WINFIULD SCOTT was the Lieutenant-General commanding the United StatesArmy at the beginning of the Civil War, and President Lincoln was in frequent consultationwith him regarding the defenses of the National Capital. Age was beginning to tell uponthe veteran, however, and he resigned to give way to General AlcClellan, who succeededhim in November, 1861. President Lincoln had much faith in General Scotts sagacity.General Scott was a Virginian, born in 1786, was the hero of the Mexican War, stood bythe Union, and died in 1866. He was captain of artillery in the War of 1812. (333)
