GEORGE B. McCLELLAN was the first Cummander-iii-Chicl ul the Union forcesin the Civil War. being but thirty-five years old when appointed. President Lincoln gavehim every possible support, providing him with plenty of men and supplies, but Mc-Clellan was always complaining and resented the interference of the President andSecretary of War. He was a great engineer and organizer, but not a fighter, like Grant.He was finally relieved by General Halleck. and in 1864 ran against Lincoln as the Demo-cratic Presidential candidate. Born in New Jersey in 1826, he died in 1877. (225)
