^4^^t ^^)\ STEPHEN A. DOUGLAS, the man who made Lincoln President of the UnitedStales, as his admirers were fond oi declaring was. from 1850 to i860, the most con-spicuous Democrat in the country. The name The Little Giant was given him becauseof his small stature and big head, and the joint debates, in 1858. between Douglas andLincoln, was known as the Battle of the Giants. He was elected United States Senatorby the Legislature of Illinois, but died, in 1861, before his third term was ended. SenatorDouglas was 3 Democratic candidate for the Presidency in i860, was born in Vermont in1813. and made his home in Illinois in 1834. (81) W 1

WILLIAM H. HERNDON, the law partner at Springfield, Illinois, of Mr. Lincolnfor many years previous to the election of the latter as President of the United States, wasalso one of his biographers. President-elect Lincoln spent most of his time, after hisnomination until his departure for Washington to be inaugurated, in the dingy law of^ce,and the sign, Lincoln & Herndon, is still preserved. Lincoln asked that his name remainon the sign until he returned from Washington, and Herndon agreed. The name was*never erased. Judge Herndon was a native of Kentucky, born in 1818, nine years laterthan Lincoln, and died at Springfield in 1891. (82)
