Summary[edit]

Description
English: in 1902, the Frank Leslie Publishing House published "The Governor Pro Tem", a story by James Edmund Dunning (who may have also been a banker born 1873, unless that was a different James Edmund Dunning). In the story, Byminster (who wants to be a United States Senator), Seamans (the lieutenant governor) and Phillips (a journalist) are plotting to overthrow Governor Wycoff by means of administrative and legislative trickery.

The illustration shows Phillips holding a telegraph operator at gunpoint and forcing him to send a false message which will contribute to Wycoff's downfall. Or.... something like that.

In 1904, the Tacoma Times republished the story in serial format; this is the illustration for the second installment.
