On the question of value[edit]

@Daniel Case: Let's just agree to disagree on the foreground focus issue. I respect that you see this as a quality issue.

What I find much more interesting is your question beginning with " And what's the EV here, anyway ... "?

I would like explain how I see that.

First of all I agree that the value is very important for an FP. Value should in my opinion be considered more broadly than the EV for this specific beach. First of all, Commons is not Wikipedia, so the project scope is much broader than just serving as an image repository for the Wikpedias (which have an encyclopedic-only scope). Commons serves all. All Wikimedia projects, but also the general public, organizations, society. Pupils looking for illustrations for their school projects, organizations or bloggers looking for media suitable for illustrating a particular article. And often the way other use the media files on Commons are completely different than the obvious such as illustrating a particular beach. For instance, when I once took a point-and-shoot photo of an iceberg with a compact camera I would never have envisioned that it could be of use as the lead image for water on 75 language wikipedias. Or that a photo of a wind farm could be relevant for illustrating Economy of Denmark, and most surprisingly for me, that a photo of a recently shot dog could find its use in illustrating Ernest Hemingway on wikiquote with the quote "In modern war there is nothing sweet nor fitting in your dying. You will die like a dog for no good reason." I had not seen that coming when I took that photo.

For me it is the same thing with this photo due primarily to its mood. I envision it could find use in any kind of illustration of couples having some kind of crisis and feeling "alone in the world". Maybe filled with sorrow after the unexpected death from cancer of a child. Maybe because one of them is sterile and they cannot get children, maybe because one of them was in a sect and fell in love with the other, and is now expelled from the sect and family. Maybe because they are just enjoying one of the few spots in a highly urbanized area, where there is room to think, discuss and just be engulfed by the great nature. --Slaunger (talk) 09:58, 25 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, I understand that. It wasn't a rhetorical question; I figured you'd have a good answer. I just wanted to read it. Daniel Case (talk) 20:51, 27 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for clarifying that, as I was in fact a bit in doubt if you had stated it as a rhetorical question. So thanks for reading it! --Slaunger (talk) 20:56, 27 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
