- Ahum, this is a photographic film photo from 1981, it has film grain not noise. --Cart (talk) 21:05, 31 May 2021 (UTC)

- Comment I'd like a discussion of the 3 versions in the history. Is this the best version, is another one better, why or why not? I think the original (or originally uploaded version, anyway) is most vivid, and I like its contrast, but perhaps it's a bit too contrasty (I'm not sure I like the solid black shapes, such as on his beard). The second version is too dark. I think the current version is brighter than optimal and not contrasty enough. It also does appear to me that the 2nd and current versions have a different kind of grain or noise than the 1st version, and that's worth discussion, too. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:57, 1 June 2021 (UTC)
- I'd argue that the current version offers the best compromise between sharpness, brightness, and noise. --Martin Falbisoner (talk) 06:37, 2 June 2021 (UTC)

- Agree: The first version is not a faithful digital reproduction: huge areas of clipped shadows. #2 seems to be a +/- straight scan of the negative, and while it retains most detail across the tonal range, it is indeed a bit dark. #3 looks like a good compromise to me. --El Grafo (talk) 09:33, 3 June 2021 (UTC)

- Support A great portrait. The second one appears to be a much higher quality scan than the first, so definitely not the first version. — Rhododendrites talk | 15:39, 1 June 2021 (UTC)

- Support Faithful portrait of an amazing artist. Noisy (what we call grain is like noise, at high ISO) but interior shot of a moving subject. Not blurry -- Basile Morin (talk) 01:51, 2 June 2021 (UTC)
- Support Hits all the marks for an essentially French portrait of a Frenchman: he is smoking, not looking directly at the camera, has several days' stubble, and it's in grainy black and white. Daniel Case (talk) 02:38, 3 June 2021 (UTC)
