SHORT DESCRIPTION
  • I was a bit quick. I know the conditions are not the easiest and that it's not easy to pick a "best" setup for the scene. Probably I'd have been more "forgiving" with a better composition and more side view. - Benh (talk) 18:34, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Guys, I don't know what you mean with better composition, the background here is not loaded/cluttered, so composition here is not a minus, which to me is a plus. If you expect crispy sharpness with a nice background of colorful anemones (Nemo style) of species of which we have so far poor quality, then I ask for somebody to do the job. Benh: please, show me the texture and sharpness you ask for here on Commons, I've shot already 5000+ pictures underwater and I can tell you that this one is sharp. Regarding the "side view" that would rather result in DoF issues, as I'll only be able to shot with f/6.4 in the best of the cases, which was not be the case here as I had to dive deeper. •  Oppose Composition / the background doesn't work for me, sorry. --Podzemnik (talk) 23:05, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Podzemnik: I get down there, shot eveything that shows up and is worth taking a picture of. Underwater you never now what you'll see and most of the wildlife there goes away if you approach. Getting a good angle, a rare subject and good quality (I probably get rid of 95% of the images I take) is already quite of a challenge. Asking for a nice background in underwater photography doesn't sound fair to me and I see no problem in this case. You don't have the possibilites underwater that you have above it to choose the best angle or the nicer background. In my opinion your comment is not sound. Poco a poco (talk) 10:11, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose I think the comment is sound. The background is not FP. I can tell you that wildlife does not go away when an experienced diver approaches. It is more tricky for novice divers who make more unecessary movements trying to get in the right place and then stay there. Although I don't take photos, I know how to approach underwater wildlife by using minimal movement and delicate buoyancy control whilst avoiding touching any coral. I think you need to be open to criticism and perhaps, as you become a better diver, you will find photogrpahy easier. You need to learn how to remain stationary in the water. You'll learn about drift diving. And swim throughs. It's not easyǃ Charlesjsharp (talk) 22:01, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Charlesjsharp The discussion here was rather about the background and not about my diving skills. When I shot this image I was still in the middle of the learning curve. By now I've 4 times more dives (yes, I've tons of images I didn't upload and not sure about that) than back then and don't consider myself a novice anymore. I keep learnimg thimgs and will always do but I don't think that I'm doing unnecessary movements. In fact, both hands are busy with rhe camera handles, so I can only use my legs. •  Oppose The quality is adequate for an underwater shot, but as I said earlier, this and many of your underwater shots lack some pleasing and real composition. I've held back from saying this on several of your noms since I know you don't react well to such comments. But you are still something of a newbie to diving and taking photos under water, you can't expect to go in at the same top level you have above the surface. Getting good compos in a new area always takes practice and patience. I'm not comparing with my own marine photos but with those made by more experienced divers like Rickard Zerpe. --Cart (talk) 20:53, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • It's hard to be good at everything Poco, and what makes a photo good often lies in the small details specific to a genre IMO (and certainly not in the gear or going everywhere and just "click"). Landscape photographers will wait for atmospheric conditions and/or walk a long way to reach the good spot, bugs hunter will go in the morning when they sleep (my guess), animals hunters will know their habit and wait for them (my guess too). For all these u can't expect to get that many FP in my view. - Benh (talk) 08:51, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose per other opposers. --Ivar (talk) 19:32, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose Unfortunate background. Christian Ferrer (talk) 11:38, 1 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment Expecting a nice background for underwater shots isn't just fair in my opinion. You will only manage that and get a HQ shot of the subject if the background is nice everywhere (great coral reef type of thing). Otherwise you cannot expect from an underwater photographer to wait and wait to get a good subject in a nice background from the ideal POV. Air is limited by the bottle and dives are expensive (let alone the equipmemt), too. For this shot I'd have understood comments like "too ordinaey fish" but not that the expectation regarding composition underwater is similar to shots above it. •  Comment You have another issue Poco a poco that you cannot solve - you are not diving in clear water. Other locations around the planet will be much better. Crystal clear water and beautiful corals etc. You'll have to wait till we can travel again... Charlesjsharp (talk) 09:27, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
