Description |
English: Although the armistice for World War I was signed on November 11, 1918, it took months before soldiers returned to Seattle. The 63rd Coast Artillery was the first local group to arrive. Crowds filled the sidewalks on March 12, 1919 as the soldiers marched up Second Avenue. The city celebrated throughout the night with parties, a street carnival, and fireworks. Here, members of the 63rd Coast Artillery parade up Second Avenue, past the Arcade Hotel and Rhodes Department Store. They left by train the following day for Tacoma and Fort Lewis. Caption information also derived from captions written by Post-Intelligencer staff and attached to the back of the photograph.
