Description: During a BSEE government initiated unannounced exercise (GIUE), an oil spill removal organization (OSRO) practices recovering and storing oil in the Beaufort Sea. The primary response vessel (stern view in the center) has deployed a side arm collection system on its starboard side (right side of picture). Oil on the surface of the water is herded into the collection pocket formed by the orange boom stretched on the system’s outrigger. The trapped oil is then removed from the boom pocket by a skimmer and pumped to a mini-storage barge lashed to the vessel’s port side (left side of picture). BSEE Preparedness Analysts from the Oil Spill Preparedness Division (OSPD) regularly inspect these types of equipment and operations during GIUEs and industry activities to ensure compliance with regulations and to monitor the overall vigor of the oil spill preparedness and response community.
