Summary[edit]
DescriptionBurning out a frozen water main (4687942767).jpg |
English: Thawing a water pipe, Western Front, during World War I. In this wintry photograph, three soldiers are trying to thaw a mains water pipe in a town or large village. One man is holding the tap head, which they seem to have removed, another has a hammer. The top of the pipe is being heated by burning rags on a pole propped against it. A second similar arrangement can be seen in the background. This photograph was probably taken in or after the winter of 1916 as one of the men is wearing a sleeveless leather jerkin of the sort which were first issued in 1916. A cavalryman walking towards them with a water-can seems to be wearing a wide-brimmed hat and may be from the American or Anzac troops. |
