Sources and methods[edit]

The curves in the diagram are based on data obtained from genus occurrence records that were downloaded from fossilworks.org. For Brachiopoda[1] the raw data set comprised a total of 168,020 occurrences of 3,673 genera, which were extracted from 5,676 references. For Bivalvia[2] the the raw data set comprised a total of 174,812 occurrences of 2,483 genera, which were extracted from 7,415 references. Most occurrences are placed in so-called 10-million-year bins (10-my bins) by the database software according to the chronostratigraphic assignment of their host rock in the references. The Phanerozoic comprises a total of 49 10-my bins (‘Cambrian 1’ [Fortunian] to ‘Cenozoic 6’ [Upper Miocene + Pliocene + Pleistocene]). The downloaded data set was modified using MS Excel as follows:

  • all occurrences that were not assigned to a particular 10-my bin (e.g. when the chronostratigraphy given in the literature was too unprecise, or in all Holocene occurrences) were eliminated from the data set
  • multiple occurrences of the same genus per 10-my bin were reduced to one
  • the remaining occurrences were summed up for each 10-my bin

The resulting data sets comprised 8,277 occurrences for Brachiopoda and 8,441 occurences for Bivalvia. The occurence values in the diagram are plotted at the ‘mean date’ for each 10-my bin (e.g. the bin ‘Triassic 1’ ranges from −252.3 Ma to −247.2 Ma, so the genus occurence values for this bin are plotted at −249.75 Ma).
